this morning i got to chance to go around my neighborhood, snapping a few pictures. i have been wanting to do a feature on here called "around the neighborhood" for a bit and today was the perfect opportunity. i got off work at 7am and it was nice and cool (not 99 degrees like it is at this very moment) so i set out to explore. a few blocks over i noticed this (above) painted fence with bicycle wheels and i stopped to take a picture. i then noticed the little raised beds that read "food is free" and signs that said "let's plant a garden" i peeked a bit in the back yard and saw a huge garden back there. then i noticed that every single house on the street had a small raised bed in the very front of the yard that also read "food is free" with vegetables growing in them. i couldn't believe what i was seeing and it actually made me feel a bit emotional. it seemed like this whole street was bonded over something so simple as home-grown food. i pictured the neighbors out picking and trading a few tomatoes from one for some lettuce from another. what a neat idea! i had to learn more so i got home and went on the website to find out just what was going on over there. check it out here: foodisfreeproject.org. i emailed them today to see if i could attend one of their saturday workshops to learn more about it and maybe take some pictures. i would love to get my street involved in this too (you can sign up to get your street involved too). sometimes the coolest things can be right under your nose. and sometimes it's amazing what you discover while taking a little neighborhood walk.
i am hoping to do another post about the food is free project so stay tuned.
